Behind—and Beyond—the Spreadsheet

For my most recent work, I told the human stories behind the World Bank Group’s support of emerging economies — writing features that show how projects, financing, and other services transform lives and jump-start markets.

The stories resonated. Several pieces earned top industry recognition from The Anthem Awards (created by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences). Others supported World Bank Group priority campaigns and ranked among the World Bank Group's most widely viewed web content. Many stories were cross-posted by the United Nations, the World Economic Forum, government ministries, partner organizations, and regional media outlets.

Stories span sectors such as infrastructure and energy, climate, agribusiness and food security, gender, manufacturing, pharma and health, technology, and education.

In other roles over nearly 16 years at the World Bank Group, I wrote and edited for flagship publications such as the IFC Insights monthly newsletter, the World Bank's weekly newsletter, and Handshake, the World Bank’s quarterly journal on public-private partnerships. I also produced more than 200 stories on development finance initiatives for the "Impact at IFC" series. Other assignments included writing case studies, blog posts, and web copy, and contributing to whitepapers, policy publications, annual reports, infographics, and video and podcast scripts.

All of these positions required the ability to grasp new sectors quickly, sensitivity to high-level corporate politics and personalities, and a collaborative mindset. I coordinated closely with internal staff, government officials, multimedia professionals, and prominent external partners. My teams trusted me to interview some of the world's most influential thinkers: Barbadian Prime Minister the Honourable Mia Amor Mottley; former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer; development economist Sir Paul Collier; former Unilever CEO Paul Polman; and senior United Nations officials.
